A Horned Grebe was observed by Deb Tracy-Kral preening and hunting in the Wappingers Creek along the Cary Institute for Ecosystem Studies (CIES) Lowland Road near the “south” bridge in Millbrook NY.  It is still being observed  on 5.29.14.  The other was seen by Susan Fox-Rogers whilst kaying in North Tivoli Bay (Red Hook NY) on 5.27.2014.The Horned Grebe is common in the winter on the Atlantic coast and is usually a transient migrant in Dutchess County. In breeding plumage it has a rufous neck, black face patch, a grey scaled back and “horns” of  yellowish patches of feathers behind its stunning red eyes.

According to THE BIRDS OF DUTCHESS COUNTY:  TODAY AND YESTERDAY by Stan DeOrsey and Barbara Butler –  “The Horned Grebe, when found, is usually seen in April on the larger lakes”.
