Tymor Forest Field Trip – 4.22.15

Wednesday April 22, 2015:   Twenty seven people came on the walk at Tymor Forest in Union Vale.  It was kind of a raptor and swallow day.  We watched five Broad-winged Hawks, a Bald Eagle, a Sharp-shinned, two Turkey Vultures, and Red-tailed Hawk. Two Great Blue Herons also flew over.  By the road where the pond is we had Barn and Northern Rough-winged Swallows buzzing around and perching on the wires. Eastern Phoebes were getting ready to nest. The Pine Warblers and the Chipping Sparrows were loudly trilling and chipping. Field Sparrows were singing, Canada Geese were on the nest, and Mallards were flying back and forth. Northern Flickers and Mockingbirds were in hot pursuit of each other competing for the females. The Louisiana Waterthrush was competing in song with the Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher. A few people saw a Hermit Thrush. We also had Jane identify some wild flowers for us:  Blood Root, Rue Anemone, and Hepatica. We also saw a Mourning Cloak and a  Spring Azure Butterflies. At the end of the walk we all had some hot dogs at the pavilion.
