R.T. Waterman Field Trip to Aberdeen Farm, Staatsburg

April 8, 2015  Eight members attended the RT Waterman Bird Club Field Trip to Aberdeen Farm in Staatsburg . It was raining off and on, but we still had a good time.  The owners of the farm were very gracious coming out in the morning to welcome us. Their three female goats Phoebe, Raven, and Odie decided to come on the walk with us.  I couldn’t believe Phoebe walked the whole way with us because she’s due to deliver a quadruple in two weeks. Odie the frisky one was following Barbara and trying to chew on our clothes. We walked the road first towards the pond. We had: a few Ring-necked Ducks, one Lesser Scaup, and three Hooded Mergansers that took off. Then we walked in a field towards an empty barn and came back to our cars. I’m told that we had 21 species but I can only say we had the usual birds with a possible kinglet. There were many Dark-eyed Juncos chasing each other and vocalizing. A Field and Fox Sparrows were heard by some. After the walk we went in the two cars to  Drake Lake on Netherwood Rd to look for the Pied-billed Grebe that was reported earlier. We found the grebe and an Osprey.
