8.13.2013 Little Blue Heron – 8.25.13 still present

Date: 8/13/2013Contributor(s): Ken Harris

Location: Wappingers Lake

On 8.13.2013  Ken Harris found a young Little Blue Heron on Wappingers Lake.  He saw it from Fisherman’s Park, which is on the south side of the lake, west of Rt 9 at Liss Road.  The bird was feeding in the water chestnut, then flew further away and perched on a dead branch toward the far side.  Little Blues wander beyond their breeding range this time of year, only occasionally showing up here.  Note that Little Blue has greenish-yellow legs instead of just the “golden slippers” of a Snowy Egret, along with a gray bill instead of black.

On 8.14.2013 the bird was seen off the boat launch on Spring Street by several Club members.  Photos provided by Jamie Collins and Carena Pooth.

8.15.2013 The Little Blue Heron continues at Wappingers Lake – sighted on the water chestnut on the west side on the Lake at 11:30am.  In its current location a scope would be needed for good views.

8.25.2013 update:   The Little Blue Heron continues on the lower Wappingers Creek, last seen on 8/25/13 at approximately 12:30 pm across from Reese Town Park (near the boat launch/kiosk). The bird is very active, constantly moving around the edges of the creek. Viewed by Allan and Barbara Michelin
