Field trips are held most Wednesdays and some weekends. Dress for the weather and bring lunch and beverage. All walks are open to the public free of charge. Inclement weather cancels walk. See for last-minute changes.

For more information and directions to most of our birding locations, see our Where to Bird page. Additional information on some Field Trip locations is included in the online 3rd edition of Where to Bird in Dutchess County, a 2016 update of the second edition (now out of print).

Field Trip starting times change throughout the year. In general, 8:30am for the month of April, 8:00am for May, 7:30am for June, July and August, 8:00am for September, 8:30am for October, and 9:00am for November through March. Also check this website or the newsletter for occasional changes.

Wednesday, June 14, Dutchess Rail Trail   Meet at the parking lot on Titusville Rd. behind Page’s retail store, Town of Poughkeepsie, at 7:30am.

Wednesday, June 21, Hopeland Sanctuary  North of Mills Mansion, Staatsburg. Meet there at 7:30am.

Saturday, June 24, Southlands Farm   Leader: Mona Payton. Meet at the office parking lot on the left side of Rt. 9, Rhinebeck, at 8:00am. Call 845-876-2836 if you plan to attend.

Wednesday, June 28, Orvis Sandanona  Meet there, Rt. 44, Millbrook, at 7:30am.

July 2017

Sunday, July 2, Cary Institute  Leader: Mike Fargione. Join the Cary Institute and the Ralph T. Waterman Bird Club for a walk on the grounds of the Cary Institute from 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. This guided walk is an opportunity for beginning to advanced birders to observe and identify local birds in different habitats. Meet at Cary west parking lot off Rt. 82. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED at Wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring drinking water and binoculars. For more information, call (845) 677-7600 x 121.

Wednesday, July 5, Madame Brett  Meet at parking lot on Tioronda Ave., Beacon, at 7:30am.  Directions: Take Rt. 9D south into Beacon. At traffic light at intersection of 9D and Tioronda Ave. (before bridge on 9D), go right (BPOE Club is on left corner). Continue on Tioronda Ave. past old warehouses and turn left under the old railroad bridge. Parking lot is on left.

Saturday, July 8, Pond Gut  Leader: Barbara Michelin. Meet there (off Gidley Rd., Town of LaGrange) at 8:00am.

Wednesday, July 12, Kidd Lane/Tivoli Bay  Meet in the parking lot of Bard College’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at 7:30am. Take 9G north to Upper Red Hook.  Turn left onto Annandale Road, CR 103.  Take the first right onto Manor Road.  You’ll pass the Performing Arts Center on your right.  At the next intersection, turn right onto Robbins Rd. Take that road to the end and turn right into the parking lot. Drive to the far end, the northwest corner of the lot.

Wednesday, July 19, Cary Institute  This is the first in a series of three Bird and Tree ID walks.  In addition to birding, Mike Fargione (Cary Institute) and Julie Hart (Dutchess Land Conservancy) will be co-leading the walks at Cary to help teach/reinforce tree identification. Meet at the Gifford House parking lot (Rt.44, Millbrook) at 7:30am.

Wednesday, August 2, Turkey Hollow/Tamarack Preserve Meet at club house parking lot on Turkey Hollow Rd. Turn off Rt. 44 (#4754 Rt.44), Millbrook, before Amenia at 7:30am. Plan to carry lunch.
