A beautiful day produced 16,181 birds
and 75 species, one less species than last year which was a
great year. The highlight
was the sighting of a Great Cormorant, the first ever for the
count. Other highlights of note were Eastern Meadowlark, Peregrine
Falcon, and Bald Eagle.
New high counts were: Hooded Merganser
(24 vs 2), Common Merganser (2nd highest count
since 1931), Double-crested Cormorant (new high 2 vs 1 in
1994, the only other record), Red-bellied Woodpecker (135
vs 76 in 2003), Northern Shrike (3 vs 2
in 1995), Tufted Titmouse (254 vs 222 in 2003), White-breasted
Nuthatch tied 1982 record of 138, Carolina Wren (62
vs 46 2002 record), Common Grackle (55 vs 30 in 2000). Missing
species that we have had at least 3 out of the last
5 years: Barred Owl, Hermit
Thrush, Field Sparrow, Purple Finch, and Pine Siskin.
The weather was partly cloudy with winds ranging from none to
5 to 10 mph from the SSE. Temperature ranged from the mid
30’s
to mid 40’s Ground was not frozen and
all water was open. This has been the 2nd warmest December
on record.
