In Memory of Betsy Gray Wilmarth
May 17, 1926 - September 12, 2004

Betsy Wilmarth passed away Sunday, September 12, 2004 at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck.  I’m writing as one of the older members of the Ralph T. Waterman Bird Club, so I remember Betsy Wilmarth from way back.

She and her husband, Jay, attended all our monthly meetings and dinners, driving down from above Pine Plains.  I always looked forward to seeing Betsy and Jay.  They came early, allowing extra time due to the driving distance and to catch up on news.  They were always chatting and exchanging bird news with friends, with Betsy busily knitting.  If I had any questions regarding some one of our older friends or Club Members in northern Dutchess, she would help me or find out.  She was like Thelma Haight or Florence Germond in this respect.....information, not gossip.  Betsy had been a visiting nurse and later a school nurse; also very active in Church work, the Historical Society and Garden Club.   She was truly a busy person in many community activities.

We will miss seeing her friendly smile and hearing her knitting needles clicking.

The memorial service held for Betsy was lovely.  The church was filled with her many friends.  A large number gave testimony of her lively spirit, her dependable smile and encouragement, and the generous giving of her time.

The pastor gave a calm, healing message, helpful to all of us, and to Jay in his wheelchair.

In Memory of Jay Wilmarth
1922 - October 9, 2004

It is with sadness that we again remember Jay Wilmarth who died October 9th only shortly after his wife, Betsy, passed away just last month.  They were such a great pair interested in all nature and community activities and members of the Ralph T. Waterman Bird Club for so many years.

They built their home on the Roeliff-Jansenkill in pine Plains, opening a portion of the river for other fishermen.  He was active in the CAC, Friends of Stissing Landmarks, Little Nine Partners Historical Society, The Methodist Church and members of the Ralph T. Waterman Bird Club.  He was actively involved in mapping wetlands for the Dutchess County EMC.

Memorial services are planned for next spring.
