In Memoriam:
Mary and Nathan Hoose

This is for those who remember and those who wish they had know both Mary and Nathan Hoose. Nathan died July 6, 1999 and Mary died May 6, 2003. They were Ralph T. Waterman Bird Club members for many years. They owned and operated Agway in Fishkill and many of us got to know them from buying our bird supplies there and we learned about their birding observations. By feeding birds heavily, they brought in large numbers of birds and often very special species like the Red-headed Woodpecker now and then and one time a very, very special bird: the Yellow-headed Blackbird.

They were very "down to earth" people being avid gardeners, interested in flowers and trees and were proven excellent birders. They were always ready to accommodate our unexpected visits to their home, especially on our May and Christmas Census days. They traveled in their camper and could relate to us their many experiences as they enjoyed life and their friends. We sure enjoyed them.

I too, remember and miss Mary and Nathan Hoose. For many years they would be feeder watchers for me on the Christmas and May Census days. They always had good birds to report from their feeders.

After Nathan died Mary called me to ask if I would be interested in Nathan’s bird plate collection. I said I would and to let me know when I should pick them up. We had a very nice visit the day I went. Each time I look and admire Nathan’s plates I think of both Mary and Nathan.
