Bird Drawing May Census 2002 Report

Total species: Total count 155; above last year's 152 and below 2000's count of 162.

Weather:: Clear day, temp range 30 to 66 degrees F. Light winds.

Participants:  51 Observers, 13 Groups, 11 Feeder Watchers
                            51 Hours by foot, 38 Hours by auto reported
                            47 Miles by foot, 439 Miles by auto reported

Highlights: Number of birds observed was quite high at 12,497 compared to 11,581 in 2001. Only one American Black Duck was seen this year; although not great numbers it has been reported for 43 previous years. Turkey Vulture at an all time high of 151 vs 1993's 104. The Hawk/Falcon species are holding their numbers. A good year for the Northern Bobwhite and Virginia Rail, Ring-billed Gull, and Doves. Owl specie and numbers were down. The American Crow at 662 was the highest count ever. Hermit Thrush at 10 birds was an all time high count. The Northern Cardinal was at an all time high of 219. The Chipping Sparrow was at an all time high of 226.
