Editor's note: Many Ralph T. Waterman Bird Club members have had the pleasure of birding with Dewi during his visits from his home in Wales to his family in Dutchess County. Before his most recent return home, Dewi presented a slide show at our monthly meeting, capturing our imagination and inspiring awe with his exquisite photos of Antarctica. Dewi is now back at a job in Antarctica. Here is his latest quick greeting to the bird club.

Signy, Jan. 23, 2002

Hi,

Arrived safely. Working all hours in atrocious weather to get tents etc up. Not much time to write. Seasick on ship for 3 days, slept for two and a half days solid!!! Will reply to e-mails when I get settled in (we are sleeping on floors all over the place at the moment!).

All well here and enjoying the challenge of fitting bases to tents of the wrong size, no fittings arrived, lack of tools to do the job and using materials from the buildings we are here to demolish to try to make a decent job of it. Still, it's what I came here for. By the way, we phoned the company who supplied the tents to ask what sizes they had supplied, they were very apologetic!?!? I'm happy, the lads are all joking and laughing their way through
this and by the next time I write, I should have been off base more than 20 yards and seen some of the island!
Have fun in your heated home,

Dewi.

Hi Everyone,

All go here, with ship due in on Thursday January 17 to take us to Signy on Friday. Everyone busy packing, finishing off work etc. Weather still hot & sunny, it's been the warmest, driest, sunniest summer on record here, but Signy have only recorded two days of sunshine all summer, so it's going to be an eye opener for us when we get there!

Arctic Tern

Sounds like you are having a great winter with things like Snowy Owl and the hummingbirds. I'm getting desperate for more birds here, but not long to wait to see seabirds on the trip South! I can't complain really because the birdlife here is so approachable, it's just the dearth of species that takes a bit of getting used to!

I'm sending you my monthly roundup of what's been happening here.

Dewi.
