Bird Drawing May Census 2001 Report

Total species: Total count 152; below last year's 162 and above 1999 count of 144.

Weather:: Cloudy to partly cloudy with a SEVERE wind/rain storm about noon in parts of the county.

Participants:  46 Observers in 9 Groups, 6 Feeder Watchers
                            79 Hours by foot, 35 Hours by auto; 57 Miles by foot, 430 Miles by auto

Highlights: Number of birds observed was quite high at 11,581 compared to 9,719 in 2000. Wood Thrush numbered 318, the highest ever and well above the second highest of 230 in 1989. Red-headed Woodpecker, seen this year, was last reported in 1988. Hooded Merganser, seen this year, was last reported in 1992. A Northern Bobwhite was recorded this year and last reported in 1995. Cliff Swallows were reported this year and last reported in 1998. There were no reports of Northern Harrier or Sharp-shinned Hawks this year. We did, however, have a double sampling of Ferncliff.
